Founded by Invoke Capital and mathematicians from the University of Cambridge, Luminance is the market-leading artificial intelligence platform for the legal profession.

The Technology

Luminance’s pioneering technology, the Legal Inference Transformation Engine (LITE), uniquely combines supervised and unsupervised machine learning to provide the most robust, powerful platform for legal analysis available to lawyers. LITE combines a number of disciplines within the field of machine learning, including inference, deep learning, natural language processing and pattern recognition. Luminance’s technology can read and form an understanding of legal documentation in any language and jurisdiction, immediately surfacing the most relevant information and vastly reducing the amount of time spent on document review.

Milestones

Since launch in 2016, Luminance is now used by over 300 law firms and organisations in over 55 countries and in more than 80 languages worldwide. The technology is currently deployed by one in five Global Top 100 law firms including White & Case and Slaughter and May, and all of the ‘Big Four’ legal service providers.

Having started with a focus on enhancing the process of M&A due diligence reviews with its ‘Luminance Diligence’ platform, the company has since expanded its offering to include ‘Luminance Discovery’, which applies its unique blend of machine learning algorithms to the process of investigations and litigation. Luminance is now used across the legal profession in a wide range of practice areas, including M&A due diligence, property portfolio analysis, eDiscovery, contract negotiation and model document comparison.

Recognition

In recognition of its fundamental technology, Luminance has received a host of awards including a Queen’s Award for Innovation and a National Technology Award, as well as being recognised in the World Economic Forum’s list of Technology Pioneers and CNBC’s Disruptor 50.
